Eight Killed in Late-Night Attack on Plateau Community

At least eight people have lost their lives following a deadly attack by gunmen in Mbwelle village, located in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident reportedly occurred late Thursday night, around 11 p.m., when armed assailants invaded the community and began shooting sporadically.

Witnesses said the attack lasted for nearly an hour, leaving several residents dead, injured, or missing.

According to reports, the victims were members of the same family. In addition to the fatalities, at least three individuals sustained injuries, while others remain unaccounted for as of the time of reporting.

Local authorities have expressed deep concern over the incident. The Chairman of  Bokkos LGA, Samuel Amalau, condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless act of violence against innocent residents. He extended condolences to the affected families and emphasized the need for unity and peace in the community.

Amalau also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and useful information that could help prevent further attacks. He reassured the public that efforts are ongoing to bring those responsible to justice and restore peace in the area.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, confirmed that investigations are currently underway, with more details expected to be released soon.

Community leaders have also raised concerns about the situation. The head of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, Kefas Mallai, noted that the attack has increased tension among residents. He claimed that the assault lasted for hours without immediate security intervention, a development that has sparked frustration within the community.

Some residents have reportedly begun planning protests, citing delayed response from security operatives. There are also concerns about the deployment of security personnel to nearby areas instead of the affected community.

The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of Plateau State, with calls growing louder for improved protection and faster emergency response to safeguard lives and property.
